Breast Cancer- Reasons Behind Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a disease that develops from breast tissues, where the breast cells grow out of control. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women in the US and UK. The breast can begin in different parts of the breast namely- Lobules, ducts and connective tissue. Generally, it develops on lobules or ducts.

When to see a Doctor

Consult your doctor whenever you notice these following:

  • A breast lump or thickening of the surrounding tissue
  • Change in shape or size of one or both breasts
  • Dimpling of breast skin
  • Frequent discharge from nipples
  • An inverted nipple
  • Rashes or reddening of skin near nipples

Causes of Breast Cancer

According to the doctors, breast cancer occurs due to abnormal growth of the breast cells. These cells divide rapidly, accumulating and forming lumps or mass. They may also metastasize through the lymph nodes to other parts of the body. But the actual causes of this are still unknown.

However, we at vedyou have listed some of the risk factors that may affect your probability of developing breast cancer.

Risk factors

 Growing old

Age is one of the biggest factors in developing breast cancer. About 8 out of 10 women with breast cancer are over 50, who have been through menopause. Women who are 50 to 70 years old should be screened for breast cancer every three years to detect it at an early stage.

Overweight women after menopause have a higher chance of getting breast cancer. The amount of estrogen increases after menopause, leading to a higher chance.

Alcohol Consumption

As per the researches, of every 200 women who drink regularly, there are at least 3 women with breast cancer. Thus having more than the standard drinks increases the risk of women being affected.

  Family History

Having a close relative who gets breast cancer before the age of 50 or has ovarian cancer, increases your risk of being affected too. But only 1 out of 10 women with breast cancer have a family history. Thus the ration is very less.

  Contraceptive Pills

Women who use contraceptive have a slightly higher chance of developing breast cancer. However, the risk decreases once you stop taking the pill and the risk moderates in 10 years after stopping.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Use of hormonal replacement therapy by women for 5 years or more, increases the probability of developing breast cancer. Both combined HRT and estrogen-only HRT affect the chances of being hit by breast cancer.

Certain medical procedures that involve the use of radiation like- X-rays and CT scans increase the risk of getting breast cancer. So, if you have had such a medical procedure to your chest area when you were a child, it raises the chance of being affected.

Here are some prevention tips for women, to prevent breast cancer:

  1. Maintain a healthy weight, avoid obesity
  2. Exercise regularly
  3. Avoid consumption of alcohol
  4. Intake less saturated fats
  5. Breastfeed- Breastfeeding lowers down the risk of developing breast cancer

Substantial support for awareness and research funding for breast cancer has helped in early diagnoses and treatment of breast cancer. The survival rates have increased and the number of deaths due to this is also declining.
